Hello! My name is April McElroy. I am a Licensed Marital and Family Therapy practicing in Tulsa, OK. I received my Undergraduate degree in Psychology in the year 2000 from Southern Connecticut State University. I obtained my Master's of Arts Degree in Marital and Family Therapy in 2015 from Southern Nazarene University. I have experience working with severely mentally ill individuals in the residential setting. I also have experience working in the Inpatient setting with individuals struggling with mental illness and substance abuse issues.
As a Marital and Family Therapist, my credentials are grounded in a systemic framework which takes into account how your relationships with people, places, and things in your life play a part in what brings you into therapy.
Today there are so many things that may contribute toward feelings of depression, anxiety, anger, and can cause issues of conflict. Individuals struggling with issues such as finances, physical and emotional disabilities may find themselves in a state of feeling stuck and feeling hopeless.
I want to extend my help and hope to you. I will utilize a culturally sensitive and trauma sensitive approach in your treatment so that I can address your specific needs. I also adopt the belief that we are all human and we all experience pain. By not being alone and in isolation, we can work through that pain so that you can begin healing and living the life that you want.
My approach is grounded in Rogerian or Person Centered Therapy which utilizes a sense of Unconditional Positive Regard. By adopting a "come as you are" approach, I have an acceptance of all the facets that make up who you are today. Part of my role as a Rogerian therapist is to be present and empathic, and humble so that we can relate to one another on a human level. My education and experience are only a part of the experience..the rest is empowering you to believe in yourself that you can trust yourself to make decisions about your life. I also borrow concepts from Therapies such as Reality Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Inner Child Therapy.
I will formulate goals with you that reflect what you are doing right and what you feel you need improvement on. The premise behind acknowledging what you are doing is that. all is not hopeless upon entering therapy..you have an abundance of support surrounding you, it's. just that negative self worth keeps you from enjoying the environment that is surrounding you. Together we will move forward by addressing specific areas of your life so that you can free up the toxic beliefs and thoughts about the part of you that holds you back and replace those thoughts and beliefs with more present centered positive ones so that you can appreciate your life better.
I want to remind you that you have choices. If you choose me to work with you, I will honor and appreciate that choice and my work with you will reflect what your goals are and how you want to live a more fulfilling life.

Online counseling, sometimes called teletherapy, refers to talk therapy delivered remotely through digital platforms, such as video calls, phone calls, or chat. It can be a great option for people who face barriers to traditional face-to-face therapy, such as those living in remote areas, individuals with mobility issues, or people with busy schedules that make it difficult to attend in-person sessions.
Teletherapy also offers greater convenience and flexibility, allowing clients to access care from the comfort of their homes. Research shows that the treatment outcomes with online counseling are often just as effective as with traditional therapy, providing a viable alternative for individuals seeking mental health support.

April has been a a godsend. I have been working with her and we have made much progress.
April is a very caring human being. She allows me to speak and doesn’t push items. She ask me questions that I wouldn’t. Overall I have a great time with April and can’t wait to see what else we discover together.
I couldn't have asked for a better therapist for my first time ever getting into therapy. April is not only a great listener, but evaluator, and reflector, and so trustworthy and honest. She's the best!
April is open, listens carefully and is very relatable. She paces herself getting to know one and isn't afraid of asking questions. I admire her strength and take courage from it;some day I will feel that confident!
April has been very communicative and has given me that confidence to speak up and be myself. That is key in a great relationship with your therapist.
April is so kind, respectful and genuinely interested in my mental state. She provides feedback that encourages me but also is blunt. She says what I need to hear and not what I want to hear, which is so essential in my growth and development.
April has been so helpful as I have navigated life over the past few months. She is an outstanding listener, and has opened my eyes to new ways of thinking and getting back to a better mental state as I process all that life throws at me. I would recommend April to anyone. She is good at what she does and you can tell she enjoys helping others. I am very grateful to have had April's assistance during this time in my life. Thank you, April!
I appreciate April and look forward to our sessions
She has been exactly what I have been looking for in a therapist. With many trial and errors and unable to find the right fit, I am glad I chose to use better help and they linked me to April. Thanks for your help in my new journey of changes.
I cannot say thank you enough! She listens and then gives her opinion with what she is hearing and then explains why you feel this way. She is SPOT ON every. single. time. I did sessions with her for 8 months and I have never felt more free and intune with my body then now. She is a fantastic therapist.
April is a delight. She very respectful and also takes a very human approach. I find myself smiling and laughing when discussing my issues more than anything. Her presence and the way she conducts the sessions is very natural and comfortable.
She is great and listens well.
She is a warm loving soul.
She is great
Literally amazing
It’s nice that you can feel she is real with you and doesn’t try to act holier than thou like some therapists I’ve dealt with in the past outside of this app. She’s fun! I like her.
April is great, so much that I'm returning to after several months away. Thanks!
I love April! She is present and an active participant in the sessions. Her responses come from a mixture of her professionalism, and her own personal perspectives and it makes it sound like I'm talking with someone rather than to someone. However, it's not like to a friend where I want her to "have my back." Instead she takes time to give full responses that challenge my thinking and invite conscious, gradual change.
April was so understanding and helpful for me! She listens well and gives wonderful feedback and asks great questions. I truly appreciated and enjoyed my time with her!
April is a very deep and compassionate listener. She holds space for you and allows you to have space for yourself to be heard and seen. I highly recommend her. Thank you April.
I appreciate how April doesn’t corral my thoughts. I am free to explore all different tangents.
April is incredibly understanding and offers many awesome and useful viewpoints
She is great
An amazing and supportive listener! Overall a great therapist
April is fantastic. She brings her open and honest self and that makes all the difference!
April has been amazing and very helpful with my first time therapy
Great listener, provides the opportunity to disagree if she brings up something that may not align to your feelings or thought process. Very helpful and encouraging
April has been my therapist for a while now, and she's the realest. Always on top of my immediate needs, always very flexible with scheduling and re-scheduling, and an all around wonderful therapist.
As a first timer, her sessions are so comfortable
She is amazing and insightful with absolutely no judgment. I feel like it's a really safe space to vent and work through things!
I have seen many therapists in the past and I truly appreciate April's methods of helping me to connect past with present in order to move forward. 10/10
She is fantastic.
April is wonderful! Patient, attentive and thoughtful to your every word. I would recommend her to anyone.
April understands how to get through to me. I love that she puts herself in the ring with you. She shares a lot of her personal experiences which significantly helps you open up.
April is amazing! An amazing listener and has a great way of explaining things! I recommend April to everyone!
I’ve only had a few sessions so far but I am confident that April is the right fit as my therapist. She is very understanding and willing to listen. I’m someone who struggles with communication and April makes me feel comfortable enough to open up.
Mrs. McElroy understands what I am going through because she is able to take her own personal and private experiences and apply them to the session. This allows for a more connected and empathetic discussion as she understands exactly what I am going through
She helps me feel comfortable with myself and her approach makes me want to talk. I don’t feel the need but want. I’m thankful for her.
She is awesome and helps me
My session with April was extremely helpful, I had a very positive outlook to things after my session with April.
I’m very grateful to be working with her. I feel very connected and excepted when I meet with her and genuinely excited because I know each time we meet something gets addressed.
April McElroy has allowed me to make a great amount of progress in very few sessions.
I just had few sessions with April and felt good already! She’s the most considerate therapist I've met, with an incredible ability to listen through the sessions and advice when the time is right. She's a huge reason I'm advising people to use BetterHelp and to go to therapy in the first place!
Very happy with Ms. April in navigating me in my therapy journey.
I've been meeting with April for around 8 months now. She is extremely insightful and sensitive in her communication. She also very clearly loves her work! I've consistently found April's reflections and suggestions notably helpful. We started by addressing issues related to one aspect of my life, and because I felt so comfortable with her, we've gotten into issues that are much more deeply rooted thay I had only hoped to address one day. I highly recommend April as a therapist.
April and I have only had a couple sessions together, but I really like her so far. It seems like she was born for this job. She has interpreted things so correctly about me/my family/childhood with barely knowing me at all. The things she says are very insightful, and she's brought up reasons for my anxiety that I would have never in a million years connected, but that make so much sense.
I have only had two sessions with April, but so far have been amazed by some of the profound analysis and diagnoses that she has been able to make in such a short space of time. Some of it can be hard to hear, but very useful so far.
April is insightful and I can tell she is really listening to and thinking about what I have to say. It is early on in our sessions, but so far she has been extremely helpful. April is a caring person and I feel very confident in her abilities to help me out. 10/10 I recommend her!
April takes a very warm and welcoming approach which made it easier to open up and talk about issues and concerns and build a rapport. I learnt many resources and strategies which I can take away and apply to my day to day life. The sessions also helped me to have a better understanding and process past challenges. I would recommend April as a counselor!
The best counselor I have ever had. She takes time to listen and is in tune with your needs.
I’ve been working with April for a few weeks now and she has definitely helped me. I find her techniques are very useful to me.
April has really helped me over the past months. She's easy to get along with, is a great listener and offers very good and careful insight.
Wonderful to work with and always available
We slowly work through my problems and don’t rush things. We didn’t set clear goals of what I wanted to achieve right at the beginning, because over time the goals I seeked became clearer than when I first started.
April is amazing, professional and caring. We had troubles with time zones and connection that’s why the sessions were postponed but we figured how to fix it even though it was frustrating in the beginning. I love the metaphors she used to help me better understand myself and the situation
I have never met with a therapist before, so my frame of reference is small, but I feel April has made it easy to confront the subjects I want to talk about and delve into. She offers a self reflection method followed by clinical advice that ads up to make sense of your current state of mind. I feel productive after a session!
April has been an incredible help to me in a very difficult time of my life. On top of all of the past trauma I’ve had throughout my life, I had a very recent and traumatic family emergency that devastated me and changed my world. April listens, cares, and advises. She has helped me find the tools within myself to continue living despite my circumstances. I could say thank you a million times and it would never be enough to adequately express my gratitude. Thank you April
I have only worked with April for a short time, but she made me feel comfortable immediately. She is warm and helpful, offering thought provoking questions as well as things to reflect on. I always leave my sessions feeling better than when I started. I couldn’t recommend her enough.
April has been an enormous help. I appreciate her compassion and ability to help me be mindful when I’ve felt overwhelmed. I highly recommend her
April has been such a great help to me so far on my journey to bettering my mental health. She is very understanding and caring. She listens to what you have to say, and also makes sure you understand her feedback/recommendations as well. I look forward to continuing to work with her.
She’s been very understanding and helpful in a short period of time.
April and I are just starting to get to know each other. I enjoy her approach and feel like she listens intently to what I have to say. I appreciate her insights, knowledge, and genuine personality.
April is great! High quality therapist, I love her intuitive approach.
She's friendly, professional, and clearly has a passion for what she does. I'd highly recommend her.
April was my first therapist and she was immensely helpful to me in dealing with my ongoing work related stress and anxiety. She also helped me identify my feelings towards my past abuse and I think I can now see what steps I need to take to move forward.
April is a very approachable, understanding counselor and she constantly challenges me to see things from a different perspective and not get caught up in my own narratives and negative thought processes. Highly recommended.
April has been truly instrumental in helping me to overcome and work through my trauma as well as my basic insecurities. I am so grateful for her for facilitating my growth and healing.
April is incredibly thoughtful in her approach to counseling. She challenges me in ways no other therapist ever has. I feel that I am making real, meaningful change within myself with April.
So far, it’s been an enlightening experience, learning more about myself and regaining confidence every day. Thanks April!
April is kind and gentle. She’s very knowledgeable and professional.
Thank you, I feel like this will be a good match.
We're at the beginning stages of getting to know one another, so we slowly building a respect and rapport with one another and I'm happy at the pace we're doing it at. April always listens to me and encourages me to think deeper on things I say without thinking and encourages my strengths. I think this is the beginning of a great professional relationship with a very kind person.
April has been a joy to work with. She has been attentive and very helpful in regards to processing trauma and moving on with healthy coping methods.
April has been very supportive and understanding from the start of our sessions. She made me and my husband feel very comfortable and so we were able to open up about our issues. There’s still a lot of work to be done but we’re definitely making some progress.
April is my first therapist and I feel she has greatly helped me. She listens and restates, allowing me to understand my situation from a true, third-party. She then gives sound counsel, allowing me to put a name to an emotion or circumstance I have found myself in. This helps because I can now identify my struggle and move forward in healing it properly instead of ignoring it because I don't even know what it is.
I have very much enjoyed and appreciated April in our sessions.
