I’m excited to get to know you better! In the meantime, here’s a little about me, and my professional experience and training.

I think one of the biggest challenges, after taking that first brave step of reaching out, is to find a good therapist that you connect with. In my twenty-eight years of experience, the therapeutic relationship is the principal reason that therapy “works” or “doesn’t work.”

My approach focuses on first developing a strong therapeutic alliance in which you feel emotionally safe and heard without judgment. You’ve already come to the conclusion that something in your life is not working. My task is to help you to identify the ways in which you’d like things to be different. From there, together we can create realistic, achievable goals that support those changes and move you toward the life that you deserve.

I have a large repertoire of strategies and interventions, which include cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness practices, and motivational interviewing. Producing insights, strategies, and tools that you can use immediately is my goal for every interaction with you.

I have extensive experience in trauma, anxiety, relationship issues (adult as well as parent-child), substance abuse, and co-occurring disorders. I have found that many people experiencing trauma or anxiety are helped by a combination of mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy. This teaches us how to tolerate our intense feelings and how to reframe unhelpful thought patterns that keep us stuck. Life is challenging and, at times, difficult and painful. Learning how to be "comfortable being uncomfortable" gives us the skill and flexibility to ride these waves (as opposed to feeling like we're treading water or simply drowning).

On a personal note, I have been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist since 1997. I have worked in a wide variety of settings, including community mental health centers, where I have worked as both therapist and clinical supervisor; university training clinics; private residential treatment facilities; and a successful private practice. I have worked with individuals, couples, families, groups, and with children of all ages.

When I’m not helping people, I can be found on the golf course or outdoors, enjoying the beauty of my surroundings. I look forward to working with you and helping you to make the changes you desire.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

In only a few sessions Heather has helped me more than months with other therapists. She’s taken considerable time to understand the ins and outs of my life and problems rather than just listen to me cry for an hour each week and call it therapy. She’s actually TEACHING me concepts that help me understand what’s going on with my body and mind so that I can hopefully manage and avoid negative thought patterns by understanding where they’re coming from and why. She’s been invaluable and I can’t recommend her enough!

I have had such a positive experience with Heather. I always feel I am in a safe, non-judgemental and comfortable space during my sessions. Heather is such an attentive listener and super responsive and personable. She communicates with a lot of empathy and compassion and I can tell that she really loves what she does and truly cares. She has helped me work through anxiety, and life adjustments such as moving abroad. Having such a wealth of experience and knowledge, Heather has provided so much practical and powerful insight, as I have had so many "A-Ha!" "Lightbulb" moments during our sessions. She is always so spot on and perceptive with her guidance. She has provided tools and guidance that have helped me break out of negative thought patterns, connect with my authentic self and the greatest takeaway being just to have empathy and compassion for myself. Thank you Heather so much. I'm so grateful for your help.

Heather has been apart of my life on and off for about two years now and I can’t imagine getting through without her. She has helped me navigate through so many obstacles in a respectful and honest way. She has allowed me to grow into a stronger version of myself and I am very grateful for all that she has taught me. I have never been lost in my entire life trying to help a family member with bipolar disorder. I’ve experience trauma from their behavior. One session I actually called Heather with my sister standing close to me going through a manic episode. She talked me through the entire thing, even having code words for when I couldn’t speak but I could listen to her. I highly recommend Heather. Thank you for everything, you have helped me in so many ways!

Heather has helped me in counselling over the course of almost two years which have truly been life-changing in the most positive sense! She combines extensive experience with an open, understanding and supportive style. She is a wonderful listener with an acute sense of when to intervene, ask instructive questions as well as being able to lend a guiding hand and heart to the counselling process. Because of her superior abilities as a therapist, I have personally been able to progress to the point where I can now take a break from counselling, having translated what we have talked about over several weeks and months into my everyday life, habits and actions. This simply would not have been possible without Heather's remarkable input. I recommend her wholeheartedly!

She has a special way of communicating with me as an individual and I have a feeling she alters her style to best bit the individual. Her knowledge covers a vast range of topics and there has not been a single subject mater this far where she has not been able to give sound advice. I have nothing but good things to say about Heather and have extreme respect and gratitude for her work. In my opinion she should be the prime example of what any great therapist should strive to be.

Heather Koledo is an extraordinary counsellor. She combines a wealth of experience with an acute ability to listen, understand and suggest, as she helps others on their journeys toward leading happier, more contented and more rewarding lives without being marred in self-criticism and negativity. I have had a truly wonderful experience with her and cannot speak more highly of her. If I had not had Heather as my counsellor I would never have made the progress toward a happier and more fulfilling life as soon as I was able to do so, if at all: and, most importantly, the insights she was able to give me and the tools with which she was able to equip me in understanding emotions, feelings, mental geography and the psychological challenges we all confront were not only invaluable during the time she counselled me but will be essential to my happiness, self-care and mental well being in future. She is the best!

Heather is warm and encouraging yet firm and unwavering in her ability to gently hold me accountable in my times of weakness. She is accepting of who I am but unafraid of flipping my thoughts upside down so I can see them more clearly. She is a wonderful therapist.

Reviewed March 2021

Heather is fantastic. She offers a comfortable, safe space to explore mental health. I have struggled many years (some unknowingly) with anxiety, some depression, and establishing proper coping mechanisms due to both life circumstances and biology. I had tried in-person therapy via free services offered with law school--they were fortunately very passionate about the importance of mental health! However, I was unable to make the sessions with my schedule, and then with the pandemic. I finally decided to try online therapy as I was struggling coping with bar exam study stress. It was the best decision I made in 2020. (Also, I passed!) I entered 2021 with the same mental health issues -- they don't necessarily go away. But they change, they don't take over my day, I understand them now. Heather helped me to stand back and offer a different perspectives for these feelings. I now am better able to respond versus react to certain feelings. I differentiate between anxious and non-anxious thoughts and feelings. It is a super power in many ways. I also was able to analyze and reassess certain coping habits. I've ditched some less healthy ones, moved them to the recreational realm they belong in, and am replacing with better habits I enjoy. Running became my other super power. Heather reminded me to be patient with and kind to myself during these changes -- often multiple times because it isn't always easy or comfortable. While I'll likely need to continue practicing these different skills throughout life, I know I can do it. I have a stronger mindset to handle it. I'll likely see her less often, but definitely will continue to. But I think everyone should have a therapist, with the frequency of visits being the only variable.

Reviewed February 2021

I feel so comfortable with Heather, mores than any counselor I've had before. She is very down to earth and it feels very natural to talk to her. She is also very knowledgeable in areas like mindfulness and meditation, will often state research findings related to what we are talking about based on recent research, and seems to know a lot about topics that come up. However, she doesn't BS; if she doesn't know something, she will tell you. Also, she is really real with you while also being gentle. Can't recommend Heather enough. So glad I joined Better Help and that I've met her!

Heather is a wonderful mentor that has encouraged me to simply be present - if you are, you aren't missing anything. Overthinking, overanalyzing and trying to get over that 'stuck' feeling are some of the challenges that Heather has helped me to bring to light and work on. I can be myself and have felt that since the beginning -- especially being over a virtual platform.

I found Heathers’s insights extremely helpful - particularly around the issues of brain v mind and the role of mindfulness in managing CPTSD and an overly active amygdala. I also found her kind words and sense of humor reassuring. Heather challenged me when I needed challenging, and supported me when I needed a boost.
