Thank you for taking the time to read my profile. I am Susan Shafer, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor for the state of North Carolina, 500hr Certified Yoga Instructor and Certified Practitioner for Emotional Freedom Techniques, also known as tapping. I hold a Masters Degree in Community Counseling from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and have been providing therapy for almost 15 years. I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults and families in a variety of settings. My areas of specialty include working with those struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions, grief/loss, ADHD and trauma related hardships. I invite you to check out my website : shafer.services
My counseling approach is eclectic and I use approaches that integrates effective wellness practices with traditional psychotherapy including CBT, Mindfulness and Emotional Freedom Techniques. I believe in creating a space that allows clients to express themselves openly and without judgement. My work focuses on helping clients to connect to their inner strengths and increase their awareness of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. At times, I combine yoga practices and psycho-educational techniques that allow clients to experience the power to connect the body and mind through breath and movement. Another form of treatment I highly encourage clients to consider is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), also referred to as 'tapping', which is a scientifically researched method of using self-applied acupressure to reduce stress, shift negative emotions, change unwanted behaviors and work to resolve with trauma memories. I have been trained in these techniques and completed mentorship to become an Accredited, Certified EFT Practitioner through EFTi.
It takes courage and trust to begin counseling and I appreciate your willingness to allow me to be a part of this journey. Together, we will identify your goals and skills to help you overcome the challenges you are experiencing or have experienced. One of my greatest joys as a therapist is to witness individuals resolve issues and gravitate toward a life fulfilled with inner peace and joy. When you are ready to begin, I am here to walk the next steps with you!

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.
Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

Susan Shafer is beyond appreciated!
I am very grateful for Susan. She is knowledgeable and comforting while keeping focus on both big, long term issues and more in the moment items. Her techniques are great for helping me get through my issues. I wish I could have more sessions a week.
I started seeing Susan right before turning 40 and needing new directions. In 5 months she has helped me become sober, learn better coping skills, and tackle the past that’s been haunting me. My future looks much brighter due to her and the work we do.

Susan has been a great help to me. She and I have similar views when it comes to how to deal with what I am going through. I can’t wait to see my growth and continue my time with her.
Susan has a wonderful, calming energy that allows me to feel comfortable opening up. I feel so much relief after speaking with her. She’s holds space for me to just breath, cry, or think whenever tough emotions come up, without ever making me feel rushed. She’s been so generous with her time and has offered ideas and suggestions that have shifted things for me even after only a few sessions. I’m so grateful to have found her.

she is the best counselor I have ever had!
To say that Susan has helped me improve my life and understand myself better would be an understatement. She perfectly walks the line of listening and explaining and always knows which way to guide me when I’m feeling overwhelmed or confused. She is encouraging, understanding, and extremely intuitive. She never judges me and is so patient when I’m feeling hesitant to open up. I feel so lucky to have Susan in my life and a part of my journey; She has guided me and helped me work through some really difficult and important things and I feel closer to the person I want to become than I ever have in my life.
I have only been seeing Susan Shafer a couple months, but I have made a lot of progress into my trauma therapy already. She makes me feel heard, respected, and truly understands the goals I have, both long and short term. I'm happy I have been paired with such a professional!
Susan is the best therapist I have ever had and I am so happy I was matched with her. She challenges me to see things differently and understand my own implicit learned behaviors and thought patterns. It has tremendously helped my communication in my relationships and what I think about myself.
Susan has been wonderful. She really listens to me, and I feel like I can tell her anything without feeling judged. She nudges me when I need it, makes great suggestions, and asks thoughtful questions. I really appreciate her.
As a professional who works in mental health , I have found my expectations for a therapist to be higher than the average person. It has been refreshing to be paired with Susan. She is timely, compassionate, and very resourceful. She is truly an expert in connecting thoughts to feelings and behaviors. She will validate you while challenging you to take on new perspectives and/or small practices to better your emotional, spiritual, and physical well being. She respects boundaries, will never force or push me into something I am not ready to dive into. I always look forward to our sessions, I give her 5 stars!
Susan was my second recommended counselor & I couldn't be more please with how BetterHelp has paired us. After reading up on her background I had a strong indication that she's exactly what I need in order to get through my rough patch. She speaks my lingo, she knows exactly what it is that I need to hear, & shes extremely responsive via messages although she does prefer to do video or phone calls & I can understand why. But basing on my current lifestyle it's better for me to respond by messages but do hope I get to hop on a phone/video call with her if that time arises. I personally recommend her 10/10, but would be mindful about whether or not this or any counselor fits your lifestyle.
I felt comfortable with her.
