My name is Heather Brown. I am a Licensed Professional Counseling living in Pennsylvania. I am a mother of three and work in a federal penitentiary. I provided Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to inmates participating in a modified therapeutic community within the prison. My experience in the counseling field began with adolescents. I provided individual, group and family counseling for adolescents participating in an after school program. The program was based on a Cognitive Behavioral approach and involved the clients working through thoughts and feels that were leading them to make poor decisions in their lives. We would work through struggles such as self-esteem issues, substance use, criminal behaviors, family issues, trauma and any other problem area the client would identify during sessions.
I had decided that counseling was a great fit for me during this time and wanted to make this my professional career choice. I decided to further my education and obtain my Master's Degree through Capella University. I loved having the flexibility that came with going to school online. It allowed me to work full time and raise my son while furthering my education. I completed my internship at Crossroads Counseling providing individual and group counseling for clients struggling with addiction issues. While completing my internship I began working in the prison setting. I was able to obtain a Drug Treatment Specialist position for an addictions based modified therapeutic community within the prison. I then moved into a psychology program that was more focused on criminal behaviors at the penitentiary level. Within this position I have worked with a variety of diagnoses from substance use to Antisocial Personality Disorder to Depression to Borderline Personality Disorder to Schizophrenia, and various others.
I have conducted family counseling with adolescents. I worked with families on examining their relationships, what was effective and ineffective within these relationships and how to work together to resolve any issues that came up. Relationships are difficult and no two people are the same. It's important for couples to consider one another's perceptions and thought patterns. With understanding comes acceptance and compromise. I like to examine the love language of each individual and facilitate discussions on how to ensure these are met for each individual.
The theoretical approach I subscribe to is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I feel it’s important for clients to understand that in any situation they have choices. It’s important to consider each choice and what desirable and undesirable consequences may result from making each choice. Clients and I work to challenge negative thinking patterns and think in ways that lead to positive feelings and positive actions. There are many ways this approach can be utilized within the therapeutic setting and empowers the clients to examine choices and make the best one for their personal situations.
I also utilize the Solution Focused Therapeutic Approach. This allows for clients to scale feelings and examine life situations that contribute to certain places on the scale. It provides a tangible way to track progress and recognize situations that contribute to negative feelings and/or behaviors. I also utilize Reality Therapy in counseling which also focuses on the fact that client's have choices and the importance of examining consequences related to each choice before making decisions. William Glaser identified five basic needs of human beings, power or a sense of self-worth, love and belonging, freedom/independence, fun, and survival. Clients and I would examine which needs are met and which need strengthening within their lives.
I am have a great deal of experience in the counseling field. I have been counseling for 13 years with various populations. I am compassionate, genuine, open-minded, objective and understanding. I want what is best for my clients and desire to be a tool in their journey to emotional well-being.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.
Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

This is rare for me but I felt immediately comfortable talking with Heather. She is very empathic and kind. When she responds when I write to her, her answers are well thought out and spot on. I was very nervous going on this healing journey but I feel safe walking it with Heather.
Heather is incredibly kind and authentic. I’ve seen so much improvement in myself since working with her. I am so thankful she chooses to work with BetterHelp. I have had such a bad experience with therapy prior to working with Heather and she has made all the difference.
Heather is wonderful. I feel comfortable sharing with her and opening up. Her responses are always thoughtful, non-threatening and inquisitive about thought process , while providing tools to “practice” while you’re not in session. Highly recommended
Heather has been compassionate, caring, and so very helpful in guiding me towards myself. I've been seeing her for over a year now, and I feel that I have been able to grow so much with her help, especially in this last few months. She is the exemplar of a great therapist.

My therapist is awesome. When I need her whether it's day or night she is right there. I love the worksheets and the techniques that she uses for me. I appreciate her so very much.
Heather has a deep understanding of what's going on with me and has given me an avenue to explore what my true concerns are and what is holding me back. Overall, I feel supported, but also that I'm able to confidently look inward to understand where things are coming from. She is very understanding, patient, and has provided me with the resources.
Heather is ebullient and listens to my concerns and feelings. She replies with an intelligent response and has empathy for my situation.

Heather is great I am approaching a year working with her and can’t wait to see where things continue to go
Heather is an amazing counselor. She's been helping me through my journey and had some insights I haven't heard from my previous counselor. She has been very helpful.
Heather is great. She has really helped me in a short amount of time. She is friendly and approachable. It is like talking to a friend so I don't feel awkward but end up speaking truthfully without any worries of judgement. It's like a load off my shoulders everytime we have a session. Thank you
I have met and been with many therapists, no doubt Heather is the best our of all of them. She truly listens and gives incredible thoughtful responses. I couldn't ask for a better therapist
Heather's been great! She understands what I'm going through and offers me sound advice. I feel like she really listens to what I have to say and encourages me to be the best person I can be for me. She's an amazing person and I love talking to her.
Heather is thoughtful, attentive, and so very insightful. My experience with her has enlightened me and give more tools than any other therapist, counselor, or psychologist has been able to over the last ten years.
It’s been amazing working with Heather. Going through some things over the last year, and she is always there checking in even if I am not there to respond to her. She seems to really care and provides solutions and ideas to keep going.
Here's the thing, I was a little skeptical about talking to someone about my problems until now. I had a issue with my job and was given this number to a health management company to help me with my stress and anxiety. At first I had a male and I ask for a female, just to feel more comfortable and that's when I found my counselor Heather Brown . From the very beginning, I felt very comfortable. After talking to Heather I feel that I'm more relaxed and calm and she taught me that by getting out of the situation that I was in. No I'm more calm ,more relaxed and I will never put myself in a situation and stay in it like I did. I would recommend her to anyone who just needs that healing, that shoulder to cry on and a not just a counsler but a buddy.
Heather is super sweet and understanding. She takes her time to understand every detail you tell her about a situation and she gives amazing feedback and advice!
She’s a great person to open up to and listens and gives you great feedback and things to work on. I enjoy our live chats because it feels like an in person session and I feel like I always accomplish something with heather
Heather is absolutely amazing. She has helped me so much over the last few months. She's so easy to talk to and friendly, it hasn't really felt like counselling at all. I really appreciate the help she has given me.
Great counselor. First Time Ive reached out for help. I Was apprehensive but I'm glad I did. Its helping a lot.
Very professional but down to Earth. I did not feel intimidated and insecure opening up to her.
Heather initiates conversations and checks in with me regularly even if I dont message. I sometimes need that and It shows concern.
Heather had been a great listener and has provided great advice.
I really like Heather because she is really devoted, precise and accurate. She always asks me if she undertook correctly what I've written and that is something I really like because nowadays there are a lot of communication problems.
