More about Emily

Hello, I am a licensed mental health counselor in the state of NY. I have worked in community mental health for five years, in both clinic and primary care medical settings. My clients have presented a wide range of concerns, including: depression, anxiety, grief, substance abuse, anger management, poverty, homelessness, and adjusting to life after incarceration.

Before graduate school I was a community organizer addressing issues of social, ecological, and economic concern; my undergraduate degrees are in Community Health and Peace and Justice Studies. I often use a systems perspective to address problems, and I have experience working with trauma related to systemic harm and oppression.

An area of special interest to me is the relationship between climate change and mental health. I chose to write my Master's thesis on how climate change impacts mental health, and I continue to follow current research on the subject.

My approach pulls substantially from narrative and feminist therapies, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I strive to be supportive and curious in my role as a counselor. Working in this field means that I learn (and unlearn) every day. I am honored to walk alongside the people who invite me into their lives, and I do my best to offer honesty and compassion in a safe and respectful way.

Online counseling, sometimes called teletherapy, refers to talk therapy delivered remotely through digital platforms, such as video calls, phone calls, or chat. It can be a great option for people who face barriers to traditional face-to-face therapy, such as those living in remote areas, individuals with mobility issues, or people with busy schedules that make it difficult to attend in-person sessions. Teletherapy also offers greater convenience and flexibility, allowing clients to access care from the comfort of their homes. Research shows that the treatment outcomes with online counseling are often just as effective as with traditional therapy, providing a viable alternative for individuals seeking mental health support.
