More about Charles

  • 15 years' experience
  • Male

I am a professional counselor, licensed in Oregon, with over 15 years of experience. I have worked as both a residential substance abuse treatment counselor and as a outpatient mental health counselor with an employee and family assistance program. I have worked with clients with a broad range of issues including substance abuse, depression, anxiety, relationship concerns and sexuality. I have also worked with first responders who have experienced trauma.

My counseling style is warm and supportive, with a little bit of humor thrown into the mix. All clients will be treated with respect and compassion, regardless of where they are on their life's journey. I strongly believe that the client is the only expert of his/her/their life and it is my job to help each one reach their full potential. We enter counseling to change something in our lives; whatever we are currently doing isn't working. But we must change how we think in order for our new behaviors to have lasting change.

To this end, my approach combines cognitive-behavioral, rational-emotive, and client-centered counseling. Just as each client is unique, each treatment plan must be as well. We will work together to create a plan that meets your specific needs. I look forward to our first session!

Charles is an excellent listener and a supportive, realistic yet optimistic person to have in your corner. Thank you for helping me through one of the toughest times in my life.

Reviewed January 2024

Charles helped me during a very dark time in my life late-2022 when I went through multiple layoffs and was going through relationship troubles. I can struggle to hear things in a very blunt manner and operate better through a nurturing system where someone helps you find the answers on your own and Charles does that to a tee. One year later and I can confidently say that 2023 has been the best year of my life because of a stable social life, blossoming career, and most importantly feeling more confident in my own skin. A lot of that was through the help of Charles.

Charles has a way of making the world feel a little lighter after each session. I appreciate that he allows you to be a person first, and helps you remember to be a person first instead of all the things you think that you should or need to be.

I’ve never had counseling before so this is my first experience and it’s just really nice to talk to Charles, someone who is a good listener and doesn’t judge you for how you’re feeling. I feel like his jokes brighten up my mood and he gives me the advice that I need to hear, not what I want to hear. He understands that progress is within my own actions and is patient if I don’t meet my goals.

My experience with Charles McBride can only be described as absolutely positive and nurturing. I met with different therapists over the years, but Charles is the one who has made an impression. He is a true professional who doesn’t simply listen but also makes you feel heard. He is very attentive to my needs while maintaining healthy boundaries and his observations and recommendations are easy to understand. He handles appointment times wonderfully. I always feel safe talking to him and I never regretted one single therapy session with him. I think he recognizes that his clients are the ones who need do the work to solve their own issues and his approach is to provide the tools and the confidence to start making those changes. I would definitely recommend Charles McBride to anyone who wanted to start their therapy journey with a trustworthy, amicable and solid professional.
