Welcome to my page! My official business name is RISE Mind & Body, LLC but you will know me as Laura McLaughlin here. I have my bachelors in social psychology from Augsburg college in Minneapolis, MN and a masters in counseling psychology from Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA. I have been a caring professional with a background in counseling since 2005. My roles as a helper began with youth addiction counseling, child & family therapy, and with attachment and trauma therapy. My current specialties include eating disorders utilizing the intuitive eating approach and internal family systems.

Many people who suffer from their negative self talk have issues that stem from trauma in relationships. It is very common and understandable that many people have issues with alcohol, depression, sleep disturbance, and anxiety that stem from trauma. The process of unpacking these traumas and learning how to self soothe in a compassionate way is important for individuals to resolve their negative coping patterns. I personally suffered The unfortunate experience of domestic violence domestic violence and emotional narcissistic abuse which led me to have a restrictive binge eating disorder and have recovered through therapy. I believe I can empathize with my clients and their struggles and understand where they are coming from. As the child of a divorced family I also understand the attachment traumas from childhood that occur can lead us to feel like there are empty places that need to be filled by codependent behavior. In my work with individuals, children, and family over the years have seen that we all have trauma. We in fact face new traumas while still processing old ones. The goal is not to be done, or to forget, but to learn how to cope, be satisfied with life, and form healthy attachments that give us a feeling of belonging and meaning. I look forward to the opportunity to walk with you in your journey of healing and finding peace.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space. Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

I've only had a couple of sessions with Laura so far, but she really helped me get through some tough times recently. Great advice and just a really amazing listener. Let's me kind of just vent but has ideas that can help me and a bevy of coping mechanisms. It's helpful to hear her perspective on things that I'm struggling with and just a huge weight off my back to have her as a support system. Her bio is impressive as well and she has a lot of experience with stuff that I've had problems with in the past and present. Sorry if there are any typos--I've been in the process of moving and my brain is totally fried. Thank goodness for Laura! Looking forward to our session tomorrow (:

She’s great and explains things so well! She lets me talk and vent and waits for me to finish, then she gives me great advice.

Laura and I have only had one video session so far, but she listened to me and helped me see things in a new light. She offered resources and guidance as well as compassion. I have worked with a counselor in the past, not through betterhelp, and often felt judged. I do not at all feel this way with Laura, more a feeling of understanding and open-mindedness, and we are just starting out, which is what I need. I look forward to growing and continuing therapy.
