More about Gretchen

  • 24 years' experience
  • Female
  • LCSW, LICSW

My name is Gretchen Raring and I am a dedicated Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-NJ, FL, AZ & ND, LICSW-MA). I received my Master's Degree in Social Work at Temple University in Philadelphia. I have over 20 years experience of specializing in treatment, outreach, and engagement with the mental health, addiction, homeless, incarcerated and/or veteran's population. Clinical managerial and program development experiences focusing on the seriously mentally ill involved in the Criminal Justice System. My key strengths are successful in outpatient therapy, community outreach, community collaboration leader, and history of successful program development.

As a therapist, I believe in therapeutic relationships based on deep acceptance, genuineness and collaboration towards personal development. I believe the needs and abilities of each individual are different and work with you to determine what approaches and techniques are most in line with your needs and strengths. My goal through therapy is to empower and motivate you to make positive changes towards the goals established while we are learning how to have a better understanding of ourselves. In my work with individuals, teenagers, young adults, families and couples, I use an eclectic approach depending on what will be effective. This may include humanistic therapy, CBT, trauma recovery model, supportive therapy, psycho-dynamic, integrative and/or emotion focused therapy. Please reference the full list below of the different therapeutic approaches that I use depending on the goals that are established together in therapy.

I specialize in the treatment of mood and adjustment disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, grief and loss and PTSD. Prioritizing self first by focusing on building and/or strengthening your self-esteem, self-love, self-care, silencing inner critic and/or work towards finding your authentic self. Please see the full list below that outlines what areas of experience and focus items we can work towards together as a team. I recognize and respect the courage it takes to make that first step and seek help, and it is a privilege to me to accompany you/teen/couple/family on your journey.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

I re-entered therapy shortly upon having an OCD relapse after my father passed away. Throughout my sessions with Ms. Raring, we were able to identify sources of anxiety, childhood trauma and the appropriate CBT I needed to do to begin to work through these issues. While there is still a lot of work to be done, Ms. Raring has assisted me in identifying the areas I would get “stuck” in and provided helpful resources along with direction for me to develop healthy coping skills that I’m beginning to use regularly with success. She is persistent when necessary without pushing you too far and can help redirect or change direction(s) as needed. I had very low expectations after a negative initial pairing with a different therapist. I selected Ms. Raring myself and she has changed my outlook and raised my expectations that I can do this and manage myself in a healthy manner. My anxiety and ruminating has decreased to the point that I do not require daily medication; only as needed. My family and friends have noticed the changes too! She is friendly and open to your process; whatever that may be. Also is always punctual and follows through. I highly recommend her as a therapist if you are struggling with where to start, OCD, anxiety, depression, trauma healing, etc. I can be a difficult individual and she was able to help me (continues to help me each week).

Reviewed September 2022

Ms. Raring continues to assist me with making progress towards building healthy coping skills and parceling out how to process grief, trauma and combat my anxiety and OCD. I no longer waste time on things I can’t fix and avoid spending time at a standstill. Redirection is my new best friend and Ms. Raring taught me how!
