He's been absolutely incredible. I felt uncomfortable at first with the idea of therapy and more specifically virtual therapy. My therapist has completely changed that and I can feel the gradual changes in my life from the subtle challenges and encouragement I'm receiving. 10/10

Thank you for checking out my profile!

My name is Terry L. Massey and I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1996 with a B.A. in Psychology. In 1997, I began studying with the International Association for Applied Control Theory, and after completing an advanced two-year program, was certified in the counseling techniques known as Applied Control Theory (more commonly linked to Reality Therapy). In that same year (1999) I was accepted into the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work Program (with a concentration in Clinical Direct Services to Children and Families) and was honored in 2000 as the first recipient of the UNCSSW Social Justice Award. In 2002, I completed my graduate studies and earned my MSW, with 75% of my work at the Honors level.

I have worked in the mental health and early childhood fields since 1994 (Charter Pines, American Daylight Treatment, Volunteers of America, Thompson Children’s Home, and United Family Services) and continue to practice as an Individual, Couple, Family and Group Psychotherapist. I have worked with a diverse population set, with ages ranging from four through adulthood, and continue to attend various trainings on a routine basis to ensure that I am offering professional and competent support to clients. My practices are rooted primarily in the Cognitive Behavioral, Rational Emotive, Family and Systems, and Existential approaches to Psychotherapy.

I am licensed in both North and South Carolina (LCSW and LISW-CP), hold an internationally recognized certification in Applied Control Theory, and is certified nationally as a Clinically Certified Sex Offender Treatment Specialist (CCSOTS) through the National Association of Forensic Counselors and the American Academy of Certified Forensic Counselors (accredited through the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, the accreditation commission of the National Organization for Competency Assurance). I have chaired the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Social Work Community Advisory Board and serve as a consulting advisor for local mental health agencies providing Community Support Team and Intensive In-Home Services. I am recognized nationally as Clinical Supervisor (certified through the National Association of Social Workers) and provide routine supervision to both LCSW-A and LPC-A practitioners. In addition, I provide Clinical Supervision to Master’s level students through internship in various clinical agencies, including the C.W. Williams Community Health Center, where I served as the Director of Behavioral Health Services for many years.

I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship between the psychotherapist and the client is a partnership through which the conditions for change are created in a holistic environment. I use multiple approaches to help a client system make a connection to their own strengths that will give them the resources to meet their challenges with more success. I am a firm believer in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, and I especially love working with systems from the Experiential and Existential approaches to psychotherapy. I believe that change is constant and should be embraced and as we reinvent ourselves in healthy ways, we re-create our lives. As we re-create our lives, we learn to respect and embrace change to continually reinvent ourselves. It's an awesome cycle, isn’t? That is my concept of healthy movement in human development. In essence, my approach to providing services is for the client to eventually not "need" me, but for them to move through the change process where I can transition from being the "emergency mechanic" to the "tune up guy".

Terry is an amazing person. His approach to therapy, especially for someone who has never been in therapy, was perfect. He made me feel safe, calm, and listened to. He was able to get me to open up and share things I had bottled up inside for years. The amount of respect and trust he exudes is second to none.

I love Terry's flexibility in supporting the unusual mode of therapy I choose to do. He holds space consciously and powerfully, and creates a safe, powerful container for the work. His highly developed personal consciousness and professional expertise, along with his warmth, compassion, and genuine concern, make him an extraordinary therapist. I recommend Terry enthusiastically!

May 2024

Terry is the first therapist that actually helped me. Having bad experience with previous ones, I was skeptical at first, but he showed me how professionally done therapy can help. He is very lively and fun, but also vastly experienced to guide me through difficult stuff. I can feel his great passion for helping people, even after 25 years of being a therapist. It is admirable.

Massey is a personable person who treats you with respect, yet knows when to challenge you. He's a rapport builder who probes you with difficult questions for you to say the necessary things aloud, for yourself to hear and for him to understand. He looks out for you, like a big brother.

Terry has been a life changing coach for me. I use the word coach because it truly feels like his guidance and perspective allows me to take a step back and evaluate my next actions. Emotionally and physically he’s been helping me to uplift myself and observe my place in the world and the worlds place in my life. I would highly recommend Terry to anyone struggling through a variety of situations or roadblocks. He’s an amazing man!

When I started talking with Terry, it was my first time ever talking to a therapist in any form. I was nervous and guarded even going into the first session, but I needed the help. He has helped me beyond compare, I really appreciate the talks and guidance. I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking help.

C.H.·Jul 2022

Wonderful

M.O.·Jul 2022

Terry has been so awesome, he don’t just hear what I say but he takes the time to analyze it, ask more question to better understand, then continues to get me thinking and challenge me to dig deeper in my head and heart. He is great about checking in before and after our sessions, always providing support and encouragement. I would recommend him to anyone, especially anyone 18-28 as he is easy to talk to, he makes it very clear that there is no pressure or judgement with anything you may or may not share. He is the passenger in your car who plays good music and helps with navigation but doesn’t sit there telling you how to drive like a parent does.

T.A.·Jun 2022

Terry is such a good therapist. He definitely broke many preconceived notions I had about coming to a therapist. Hands down I feel as though I have a friend who is looking out for me and helping me navigate where I am, as well as where I want to be. Thank you so much Terry, you’ve helped me more than you know. Through this experience I’ve been able to frame things differently and understand myself and my psyche much more. With all the stress I have in my life I feel as though I am better equipped to navigate it with everything I have going on. I can go on and on, but long story short, I am grateful and so appreciative to have Terry as my Therapist! Thank you so much for your love, encouragement, support, and friendship! It means so much more than you know. Thank you for helping navigate what I have on my plate. You Rock!!!

R.E.·Jun 2022

I appreciate Terry a lot as a therapist. He's a kind man and he really listens and offers great advice. My only issue is that he is too affectionate in his choice of words, for example: choosing to say "I love you" at the end of appointments. Due to bad experiences in the past, it makes me very uneasy as a person who is assigned female at birth to be told this by a man in a position of power. I know he means absolutely bad by it whatsoever, but I don't feel comfortable enough to continue therapy with him. I think it's inappropriate for a therapist to be this affectionate with clients, but not everyone feels the same way and this may work very well for others. I genuinely want to wish Terry the best and thank him for the therapy sessions he offered. I did learn a lot from him.

I.L.·Jun 2022
