What is Gestalt therapy?

The Gestalt therapeutic approach is a ‘humanistic’ approach based on the idea that all people have the capacity to heal and grow if they are helped to have a holistic awareness of themselves and the situation/world they are in. Gestalt counselling believes that every person can become a more fully functioning person when they learn to be self-aware.

Awareness is our capacity to be open to our full experience of what we are doing (thinking, feeling, behaving) as we are doing it, in the current moment, rather than focussing on what happened in the past, or what might happen in the future. Thus, we can learn new ways of being and acting as we undo automatic embedded patterns (habits and ‘baggage’) which all human beings acquire over time.

The principles of the Gestalt Therapeutic approach are focused on the counsellor being honest, curious, willing to engage in dialogue, and non-judgmental in the here and now.

My counselling style is relaxed and friendly. I have been described as supportive, caring, and creative, in my use of metaphors and Gestalt therapy techniques.

With face to face work online I tend to work in the present moment . My philosophy is that we cannot change the past but we can explore on how we are being and doing in the here and now.

  I like to focus on self - awareness work, identifying your strengths and building up resilience and resources and helping you to maximise them to overcome your obstacles. I'm here to help you sort through the things that are difficult right now and offer you a safe place to be open and honest without fear of judgment

I have experience in helping clients with coping with grief and loss . I also have experience in supporting those with sleeping disorders, especially insomnia. The Gestalt approach is also suitable for a variety of difficulties such stress, low mood, anxiety and depression and in situations where people feel 'stuck'.

I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment.

I also provide therapeutic coaching and new ways of seeing using Gestalt therapeutic techniques so people can have new insight into themselves and their problems/situation and then start feeling better quickly.
