Hello! My name is Jan Ricks and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Florida and a Licensed Independent Social Worker in Ohio. I recently moved back to Florida from Northern Kentucky where I lived for 16 years. I taught at the University of Cincinnati in the School of Social Work and when I retired (as an Emeritus Professor) we moved back to Florida. I am now focused on living my dream of providing therapy. I have been a Professional Social Worker for over 30 years, and I also have over 10 years of professional therapy work experience. I have experience working with many different populations including individuals and families, to inclued teens and adults: the elderly the LGBTQ+ community including any gender variant person (Transgender, Intersex...). I have extensive experience helping people move forward in a productive way. I have worked with people experiencing life changes, grief and loss, women's issues, and many other life challenges. I have traveled to many places in the State of Ohio and Florida, conducting workshops for the employees of the State who required recertification. I have also conducted workshops and classes for private agencies providing education about Transgender, Gay, Lesbian and Intersex communities. I recently taught at the University of Central Florida as an Online instructor in the MSW program for the School of Social Work. After leaving the University of Central Florida I began working as a therapist at Better Help. I truly enjoy my work and have found online therapy to be very effective. It offers many opportunities that are not available in an office setting.

Most important is I believe in the resilience of the human spirit and the power of change, and I also believe that people have many strengths that will help them overcome challenges they are facing. I utilize a variety of therapeutic methods including Cognitive-Behavior therapy to help create the change that people need. Taking the first step to seeking a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage and I am grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of creating that change. I am here to support you in that process. I also want to say that a therapist must be a good fit and I understand that reaching out can be difficult. I encourage you to take the leap! I look forward to meeting you!

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

Simply put, I am so glad that my therapy journey has brought her into my life! She’s a wonderful listener, poses great questions and offers great exercises and feedback. I feel so comfortable making changes and learning to put up boundaries that I would have never done before.

I've been talking to Jan for half a year. She is incredibly compassionate while also helping me work through my challenges head-on. She checks up on what we talked about in past weeks, stays engaged in the conversation, and asks thought-provoking questions I might not have previously considered. There is a sense of connectivity through the sessions and this helps me stay active on the coping methods we've developed over time. I recommend Jan for anyone looking to work on their situations with compassion on the other end of the call. I also recommend her specifically if you are struggling with anxiety, stress, gender-identity, or ADHD.

She checks in on topics we've talked about. She is open-minded and has really helped me work through my struggles. I can't recommend her enough. She is knowledgeable and really cares. I always look forward to our sessions. Thank you Jan!

Working with Janice has been so helpful! Our sessions are thoughtful, contemplative and flow naturally. She really assists affirming my positive thoughts and turning around my negative ones. It has been so nice to talk through things you usually keep in your head and get feedback that helps me pursue the healthy choices regarding them. Janice also provides so many resources and worksheets to help continue the work outside of your sessions. I look forward to her expertise weekly!

Janice is exactly what I needed. She is truly remarkable!

Reviewed July 2023

I am really loving my time with Janice so far! This is my first time with therapy and she has made it so easy for me. She listens to what I have to say but doesn’t make me feel like I have to do all the talking. Sometimes I don’t even know what to say or where to start and she prompts me by just talking to me, which makes me think of things I wouldn’t have necessarily thought of on my own. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for some support!
