Welcome to my profile page at BetterHelp! Most of the people I work with call me Marty. I'm looking forward to meeting you and working with you.

I am a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a masters degree in psychology and a doctorate in sexology. I have worked extensively in County Behavioral Health systems both as a therapist and a supervisor, and in private practice as well. I have also worked in a hospital setting at the Johns Hopkins Medical School and in grade schools, middle schools and high schools as well as institutional settings including jails and juvenile halls. It's been my privilege to work with children, adolescents, young people, adults and older adults as singles, couples, and polycules in traditional and intentional families. In all, I have more than 30 years experience with individual, family and group therapy and in supervising other licensed professionals and interns.

I have published extensively about working with sexual issues. I have a special interest in working with people who struggle with concerns related to polyamory, gender expression, less common sexual interests including BDSM/Kink, LGBTQIA concerns and disorders of sex development (DSD or intersex). I also have experience working with patients who have medically related mental health concerns, including post-surgical patients whose functioning is compromised and those with head trauma, brain injury or other debilitating accidents that impair or alter sexual function. Sometimes such arousal patterns and practices, or differences in physical development or functioning can give rise to difficulty in relationships including marriage/partnering, family dynamics, and parenting.

And, of course, it's common for sexual concerns to be a part of the work in therapy with trauma, abuse, anxiety and depression and obsessive or compulsive behaviors.

My approach to working with people in therapy is to meet them where they are, help them formulate goals, and marshal the tools to help them meet their objectives. There are many theoretical orientations and philosophies, techniques, and treatment aids every therapist learns about in school and masters on the job. The best ones are the ones that work for you. My job as a therapist is to offer you tools and support you on your journey.

Online counseling, sometimes called teletherapy, refers to talk therapy delivered remotely through digital platforms, such as video calls, phone calls, or chat. It can be a great option for people who face barriers to traditional face-to-face therapy, such as those living in remote areas, individuals with mobility issues, or people with busy schedules that make it difficult to attend in-person sessions. Teletherapy also offers greater convenience and flexibility, allowing clients to access care from the comfort of their homes. Research shows that the treatment outcomes with online counseling are often just as effective as with traditional therapy, providing a viable alternative for individuals seeking mental health support.

Reviewed Jul 2019

Dr. Malin "Marty" really helped me through a rough time. He's like the dad I've always wanted. He gives excellent and applicable advice, and offers unique insight I hadn't thought of. I was very grateful he did not just respond with "and how does that make you feel?" Ug! That's why I've never liked therapy...because of those stupid and lazy types of responses. Marty actually offers sound advice, while never coming across as preachy or judgmental. I really appreciated all he did for me and will definitely go to him again when I need him.

Dr. Malin Jr. (aka Marty :) ) is a wonderful therapist. For the longest time I thought I would never be "okay" but it is because of him that I was finally able to learn how to love myself. He listened to my life story actively and was extremely patient and kind even when I struggle to piece it together. His guided questions are thought provoking and powerful allowing the therapy session to continue well after the video conversation has ended. I highly recommend Dr. Marty!

Reviewed Nov 2018

I've only been working with Dr. Malin for a few weeks, and it's been an incredibly rewarding experience so far. I speak to Marty once a week, usually for 60 minutes by phone, and he always gives me much to take away from that hour. I feel like he truly understands my needs and, more importantly, he makes sure that I always FEEL understood, which is so important to me. He provides me with insights that lets me understand myself better, as well as practical advice, which allows me to implement better changes in my life. In the last month that I've been working with Marty, there has already been prominent, positive changes in my life, and for that I am super grateful. My favorite part of our sessions are when he asks me questions to help me explore beyond just the surface of my problems. I'm naturally introspective, so I really appreciate Marty's counseling and communication style. He is skilled, knowledgeable, warm, and has a good sense of humor. I feel fortunate to be working with him.

Reviewed Oct 2018

Dr. Malin, Jr., is very responsive and asks pertinent questions to the situation at hand. He has helped me think through some issues and come to a better or at least clearer understanding of them and myself. He gives me feedback which helps me to focus my attention on "problems" at hand.

Reviewed Oct 2018

Dr. Malin is very quick with helping to identify potential problems or things that need to be tackled within my general concerns. He is very thorough in his descriptions and tends to be very understanding and logical.

Reviewed Sep 2018

Marty understood very quickly what I am struggling with and actively think of ways to help me cope. He is patient when I have a lot of things to get off my chest. He also asks though provoking questions when I don't know what to say or when he wants me to explore some ideas I might not have thought of. He shows that he is interested in me as an individual. He doesn't show any signs of judgement; I feel safe and welcomed when I speak to him over messages and video calls. He is an intelligent and caring person. He's great at challenging my negative thoughts while making sure I'm emotionally supported.

Reviewed Sep 2018

I've been in various forms of counseling over the years (mostly family matters) but it seems like for a variety of reasons this on-line counseling has opened up a basket of goodies that are being dealt with. I'm 60 so not a spring chicken and realize there's so much room to make a better future, but clearing out the cobwebs and making new connections in your brain is fundamental for that to happen.
